Volunteer with the Sisters at Providence Village
Spending time with the Sisters is a meaningful way to give back, build relationships, and support a caring, values-driven community. Whether you’re a student, working professional, or retiree, your time and presence can make a real difference.
Why Volunteer?
As a volunteer, you will:
- Help reduce isolation and loneliness
- Build warm, one-to-one connections
- Support meaningful activities, outings, and special events
- Enrich the Sisters’ daily lives through presence, conversation, and care
No clinical experience is needed—just kindness, reliability, and a willingness to spend time with older adults.
Volunteer Roles
Friendly Companion
Visit with Sisters one-on-one to provide conversation, companionship, and emotional support. Friendly Companions help reduce loneliness and keep Sisters connected to their community and interests.
Student Activity Assistant
Support the Activity Coordinator with planned programs such as crafts, music, games, and small group activities. You’ll offer companionship, helping Sisters feel engaged and included.
Special Event Volunteer
Help with tea parties, seasonal celebrations, special events, and occasional outings. This is a great option if you have limited time or prefer short-term, event-based commitments.
Montessori Program Volunteer (Dementia Support)
Assist with Montessori-based activities for Sisters living with dementia or other disabilities. You’ll help create a calm, supportive environment using cues and memory aids that promote dignity, choice, independence, and a sense of accomplishment.
Games Facilitator
Lead one-on-one or small group games—such as cards, word games, or board games—in a relaxed setting. Games Facilitators help make everyday life more social, stimulating, and fun.
Walking Companion
Walk alongside Sisters who enjoy being active but do not need full physical care. Companion walking offers social connection, supports emotional wellbeing, and encourages gentle physical activity.
Volunteer Requirements
To help keep the Sisters safe and well, all volunteers are asked to meet a few mandatory requirements:
- Background checks: A Criminal Background Check (CPIC), and a Vulnerable Sector Check (VS) — these are completed through your local Police Service at your own cost.
- Vaccinations: To protect the health and wellness of Sisters and staff, all volunteers must be fully vaccinated against communicable diseases as outlined in the Canadian Immunization Guide. You may be required to provide vaccination records.
- Interview: All volunteers take part in an interview to confirm their interests, availability, and suitability—whether you are applying for a student placement or a general volunteer role.
- Reference check: The Volunteer Coordinator will complete reference checks for all prospective volunteers.
